windows setup setup exe application error

When trying to install Vista from a cold boot, I get past the entering of the Product Key and then to the "Which Type Of Installation Do You Want?" Obviously I choose the Custom (advanced) to install a clean copy of Vista and then suddenly I get the following error: --------------------------------------------------------------------- Windows Setup: setup.exe - Application Error --------------------------------------------------------------------- The exception unknown software exception (0xe0000100) occured in the application at location 0x77f43f63. ---------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't know what that error code means- but, try to install it again. Are you putting Vista on a separate partition? Please, don't delete your present OS.
Also, when you go to install Vista, disconnect any devices (web cams, USB drives, thumb drives) that you don't absolutely need. Then, once Vista is installed connect each device and install them one by one.
